History of the School
A previous governor of British Columbia by the name of Sir James Douglas, the institution was founded in 1970. In 1981, Kwantlen College and Douglas College parted ways.
Armor and weapons
The Douglas College coat of arms was made public on January 21, 2020. For the college’s 50th anniversary, a Coast Salish artist named Carrielynn Victor designed the logo. The symbol was totally designed by an Indigenous artist, a first in Canada’s history. The heart in the center of the logo alludes to the college’s motto, “Do what you love.” The crown on top was made out of cedar, a locally accessible wood commodity.
The raven on the crest is designed to represent intelligence, just as the bird does. Two Douglas fir trees that are meant to signify a relationship to the college’s name surround the raven. Excellence, Knowledge, and Passion are written in Coast Salish beneath the shield. The college’s location on First Nations land is acknowledged by the usage of the Indigenous language.
Controversy
In January 2012, a 16×9 news report on alleged huge fraud at Douglas College’s partner campuses in China aired. Some members of the academic staff claimed that some Chinese graduates were unable to speak in simple English. They alleged rampant fraud, whereby students were guaranteed to pass their courses using a variety of strategies, including make-up exams that got progressively easier and answer papers purchased illegally, as well as tampering with grades. According to Robert Buller, a former dean of commerce and business, Scott McAlpine, president of Douglas College, allegedly said when questioned about the situation that “he needed plausible deniability and he wanted to see and hear nothing.”
Since then, Douglas College and the British Columbia Ministry of Advanced Education have produced a report on the subject.
Even while it came to the conclusion that there was “no evidence of academic dishonesty or fraud in the operations of Douglas College,” the study noted specific areas of concern, such as the lack of control in the use of challenge exams. The review concluded that Douglas College would have benefited from quicker and more thoughtful responses to previously identified issues.
